DeleteNot really, i believe they will have a choice and finish their degree at MIT. I have seen it often when PIs move senior students and even postdocs stay in the original school and finish their work there. It is the semi-new students who have to move. But then again they will alos have a choice to stay and switch advisors.

Where is this world going?

Jennifer Heemstra told tons of people how bad she was treated at Utah. She is active in twitter but I do not think she openly criticized her former colleagues. Calling out names in public is just a low class move and does not make him look good.
DeleteI think what he did is fine. A colleague for 5 years is pitched over the side with zero explanation of the tenure vote. UC is fine to make whatever choices they want, but to not even explain is a step below unprofessional. It's not like he had a poor case for tenure on paper.
DeleteHe's good on paper, but Chicago is known to have a very high bar when it comes to impact on the field. His twitter response gives insight into his professional attitude. I wonder how much that played into the decision.

DeleteJared is an excellent scientist and accomplished exactly what he set out to do when he started at Chicago. That said, the last tweet and calling people out is inappropriate.
DeletePeople are denied tenure for many reasons, including teaching and collegiality (when there are MAJOR issues with these). I don't know Jared, but my colleagues said these tweets are par for the course, so maybe there are personal reasons why they didn't want him. I have no idea, but from his research output, he's an excellent scientist. And absolutely they should have told him why he was denied tenure. I have never heard of someone not being given a reason. Ever.
Did he ever say he wasn't given a reason, though? He just said that he doesn't know who voted no, beyond the three he names (which, as Anon 1:30 states, lends itself to racial issues, whether that was intended or not).

DeleteIt seems that the administration tried to set it up so everyone could save face. A unilateral move away from that position speaks volumes.
Not only should he have tweeted this, he has a *responsibility* to. Can you imagine deciding between U Chicago and another school in the next five years, and not knowing you should be carefully checking into this specific story? Maybe there's nothing to the story, but people interviewing there should know about it and can now look into it and satisfy themselves that they aren't risking the same booting out at the 5-year mark followed by a big step down in number of locations you can move to.
DeleteWe have to think from the point of view of the next young buck coming along and considering working there. The institution itself *not* deserving of hiding this issue, but *are* deserving of having their side heard when the next make a job offer.
No one has a *responsibility* to call specific people out of a *departmental* tenure decision.

Naive young scientist here...why is it viewed as a personal attack? If you're not impressed by someone's tenure case and voted against their promotion, then you should be okay with others knowing your decision and defend it if you need to. Anonymity just leads to the usual gossip and speculation. Jared's tweet opens the door for the tenure committee to explain their decision in a way that is informative for aspiring faculty, or for everyone to move on and stop speculating.
DeleteTenure decisions are a department-wide decision. All tenured faculty have a vote (after extensive discussions and sometimes debate). To specifically call out select people is a personal attack, IMO.
DeleteGetting tenure is a complicate process, especially in an elite school. That is the contract you signed up, so man up and live through it Jared. Good luck at IU and be nice to your future junior colleagues who cannot even apply for the Packard Fellowship.

What happened to Kami Hull? Did she get tenured at UIUC? The Organic Division at UIUC is much better than that at UT Austin.
DeleteEh, UT Austin and state of Texas are in much better shape financially. UIUC lost quite a bit of its stellar faculty over the past few years. And besides UT is a top public university every bit as good as UIUC so no loss there.

DeleteWe are talking about Organic Division here. Although UT is a top public school, we should look at the current situation in the Organic Division at UT and there is no comparison with UIUC.
DeleteThe Champaign/Urbana paper actually reported that the UT system has a dedicated pool of money for poaching Illinois faculty.
DeleteUIUC is suffering from the instability of the state fiscal situation. The buildings are also garbage compared to new construction at UT Austin. UT further has the benefit of the Welch Foundation and CPRIT for extra a lot of Texas-only funding while Illinois has nothing for state-specific funding. Not everything comes down to "organic divisions" in making career decisions.
