ReplyDeleteWhat's so dramatic about that? As far as I can tell, the ~top 5 schools (say, Harvard, Caltech, MIT, Berkeley, Stanford. Substitute as you see fit) interview widely almost every year, but only make an offer when they are really blown away.
DeleteIt does amaze, though, that we haven't seen many high-echelon poaches (yet). I assume we'll start hearing about the big moves once Spring term wraps up (May-June)

DeleteThe only reason I'd guess is that he had overlap with John Wood when they both worked for Schreiber way back in the day. I'd guess John came to Baylor to take advantage of CPRIT funding, but Romo had access to CPRIT funding (ideally) at TA&M because it's in Texas. It's a step down that's for sure

Wow! Another USC poach from Scripps. Last year alone, 4 professors moved from Scripps to USC (Stevens, Kuhn, Cherezov and Katritch). Seems like Scripps has been losing a lot of its faculty members (also K. C. Nicolaou and M. G. Finn)...
DeleteRumour has it that the Baran lab couldn't do chemistry for weeks a few years back because they couldn't afford GLOVES...the fact that ANY research is able to be done at Scripps in this day and age (ie post NIH doubling era) perpetually amazes me
