It wasn't six science or nature papers, most weren't even JACS papers. That is why that publication record is shitty because most papers were not in top journals.

DeleteSorry to keep this active See Arr Oh, but I'd like to defend the honor of CS here. I know that he had made the decision to leave academia approximately a year ago and this may be a cause, rather than a consequence, of his relative lack of publications. You might notice the lack of the "finishing flurry" of papers typical for assistant professors approaching tenure. As to the quality of the work, the Angew. Chemie and JACS papers are really good. The Inorg. Chem. ones are high-quality material as well. One thing to keep in mind is that it's a lot harder to get synthetic inorganic chemistry into JACS than it was ten, fifteen years ago. Unless you're A) a faculty member from a top-ten school or B) an established star who's been publishing in JACS for twenty plus years, Franken-Stang won't give your work a fair review. I concede that even with another two or three IC-or-better publications that the tenure case would be borderline (likely hinging on funding), but I wouldn't characterize CS as a flame-out by any stretch of the imagination.

DeleteYou are right about PSU imploding regarding organic chemistry, so yes it's not surprising he is moving. But it is surprising that he is moving to Boise state, I never even heard of that place. Why isn't he moving to a school in the same class as PSU. Why is he completely downgrading universities?

Rankings are irrelevant and outdated - would you consider Columbia and Cornell top 10 programs currently? Outside of the rockstar bioinorganic faculty (Benkovic included) who else is above average? The lost their young star to MIT last year and Gong Chen has left for China. Not surprising that Phillips would be the next out.

DeleteI just looked up Boise State dept of Chem and dept of Mat Sci. Chem doesn't even have a PhD program, but they hired two guys out of industry/government in the last 3 years (Michael Callahan from NASA and Adam Colson from Dow). Maybe they're ramping up a research program there, although I can't imagine that a school in Idaho can afford to pay big $$$. If Scott Phillips is going to materials science, that department has a 5-year-old PhD program and has been hiring like crazy based on the number of assistant profs on the roster. It looks like Boise State just got R3 Carnegie status last year! What's going on in Boise that people are leaving NASA, Dow, Penn State, NIST, etc to go there?!?!

She was originally denied tenure, appealed, and then received tenure - and rightfully so. Clearly the department has some issues if she was even considered borderline! She will thrive elsewhere with a supportive bioorganic division.

DeleteI believe she received her NIH grant after the department voted NO on her case. It is hard to get tenured in the department where all of Assistant Organic Professors got NIH grants before they submitted their tenure package. I was a little worried about her case.

DeleteIt should be good enough at most places these days! However, it may not be enough at Utah when comparing her tenure package(grants, publication record, and outside letters) with other Organic Faculty members who recently got tenured there. Her research is in the area of bioorganic chemistry. Thus, it is expected that she should get NIH grants in order to maintain a productive program after she receives tenure. Without NIH grants, it will get nowhere since it is expensive to do biological research. Army, NSF CAREER and Cottrell are more not enough because these combined grants are less than an R01 NIH grant in the dollar amount. It is a tough case! I do feel bad for Jen. However, I am sure she has already got offers from other places!

DeleteHow in the world can this be true? An NIH R01 is ~250K per year for 5 years with a chance to renew. Is there any way all that can't add up to 250K per year (the length is not that long for other grants, sure, but in total dollar amount per year). Also, once you get in with the ARO, that can be a ton of money--often more than an R01 annually. Given where the current administration is headed, it seems like a lot safer pool of money than NIH as well.
In addition to Kiril Kovnir, Julia Zaikina is hired as an inorganic assistant prof at ISU. Also, Davit Potoyan is a new theory hire at Iowa State.

DeleteGood science with bad english is still a good science and while bad science can't be saved with fluency.
DeleteThe market is tight enough that you should need both skills.
DeleteWe need fewer mediocre science professors, *and* fewer inarticulate, illiterate professors . I've seen enough of both.
However, fluency can ambush proposals, publications, and funding thereby getting in the way of good science. Also, many people forget that teaching is a major part of this job - fluency and the ability to communicate is paramount.
DeleteI should be clear, this statement is generally speaking, I am not familiar with the candidate mentioned above. I have served on a number of search committees and review panels to affirm the comments above.
A modest command of the English language does not imply illiteracy, nor does a poor understanding of using articles imply an inability to speak. As a native English speaker, I've still managed to find plenty to learn from non-native speakers; certainly there's a point where it becomes difficult to understand someone, but are you really saying you find it difficult to comprehend Dr. Dou's website? That reflects more on you than it does on Dr. Dou.
DeleteI am a non-native speaker and my colleagues still correct some grammar errors in my manuscript or proposal for me. I do not think there is any communication problem but this indeed affects my teaching. I am working hard to reduce the burden of my native speaker students.

How about not getting tenure?... jussayin. What is with all these bashings of PSU. It may not be doing too well in one area but overall PSU has proved to be consistency good always somewhere in top 20-ish lists. It hands down beats John Hopkins, Rice, Emory, Brown etc which are all pretty respectable places on their own.

DeleteTop 20-ish, riiight. Again, aside from its bioinorganic group - which are top notch - there is nobody home. The only reason they still have a top 30 rating is the sheer # of faculty and the # of students they graduate (both inflate rankings). FWIW I would much prefer a slim department of high productivity than the opposite both at the graduate student level and also for faculty lifestyle. Trajectory wise I would much prefer Irvine, Emory, NYU, and UNC to PSU and all the others you listed above these days.
Dude, you don't know anything about PSU. Yes they have a strong program in bioinogranic, no one will doubt that. They are also very strong in inorganic and materials chemistry. PSU has Tom Mallouk (JACS editor), Ray Schaak (ACS Nano Editor), Paul Cremer (JACS Editor). They are more then just a bioionorganic place, they are definitely a top 20 program overall. Perhaps you should perform some more research on a program before you bash it.
